MOUNTED SAR
Rideau Search and Rescue is one of two volunteer search and rescue teams in Ontario that has developed a mounted capability within its team. The employment of horses, either independently of, or in concert with traditional foot-borne searchers, affords the team increased flexibility, mobility and overall effectiveness.
As prey animals, horses possess superior situational awareness that greatly enhances the capability of mounted searchers. Their strength and endurance ensure significantly longer periods of useful operation each day, coupled with the fact that they are quieter, less intrusive and more eco-friendly than motorized vehicles.
