TRAINING

All RIDEAU SAR members start by taking a 4 day Basic Search And Rescue (BSAR) course which is based on the OSARVA “Search Techniques Manual”. This course covers topics such as Ground Navigation (Map, Compass, and GPS), Clue Awareness, Search Techniques, Wilderness Survival, ICS 100, Communications, Note Taking, and an introduction to Search and Rescue in Canada.

On-going training is designed to practice and hone the skills learned in the BSAR course through exercises and simulations. These training sessions are typically scheduled 2-4 times per year.  Once members demonstrate competence in the field, their status is switched to “Operationally Ready”, and they are ready be called out to a search.

In addition, we periodically offer our members more advanced training in topics such as ICS 200 and Team Leader courses.

Joint training with other teams provides an opportunity to learn from each other and ensure interoperability.
